Week of April 21, 2025

PreK

This week in Preschool we are studying ocean animals, earth day, and recycling. Students sorted recyclable items and trash, talked about how litter affects all life on Earth, and what we can do to keep our planet clean. We also planned to reuse items to help keep animals and people healthy and safe.

Kindergarten

We did a science experiment and made the planet earth!

After reading the story Bread Comea to Life, the Kindergarten students in Ms LaGiglia’s class learned how to make bread and butter. They liked watching the dough rise and shaking the jar tp make butter, but the best part was eating their hard work!

First Grade

1). We learned about whether addition math facts were equal to each other using true and false statements.

2). We completed our writing an opinion on whether we would have liked to live long ago or not after learning about life a century ago.

3). We read about where our food comes from before it reaches the supermarkets.

4). We learned about the text feature “bold print” and why it is important in reading non-fiction text.

5). We learned more about compass roses and map symbols in social studies.

6). Reading groups made rain forest level drawings to show where different animals share the same habitat.

Second Grade

Second graders are learning how to measure objects and are learning to choose the appropriate tool to measure the objects! We had a lot of fun measuring items around our classroom.

Third Grade

Jackson from the BCS tech department came to third grade today to teach students the basics of how a computer works and to show them the inside of a Chromebook and PC. The students learned so much and had so many great questions.

Fourth Grade

What a great way to kick off testing…a Rock the Test convocation, complete with rock music and dancing. Jacq finished all of XtraMath!

Fifth Grade

Fifth graders LOVE working with their kindergarten buddies! The best part for me is watching them “teach” and listening to their conversation. This week I heard, “Now, what do you notice about this problem?” and “Good job, Buddy!”.   Hearing these comments makes for a happy teacher!

5th grade students concentrating hard on making those perfect cursive signatures! With Biztown in their immediate future, they may need to pay a few bills…hopefully no traffic tickets.

STEM

For this week’s blog we wanted to share a couple pictures from 5th grade. Fifth grade finished their scale distance model of our solar system this past Friday. They did an excellent job.

This week 2nd grade made model animals and learned how animals play many different parts in seed dispersal. The model animals came in contact with different types of seeds and then hopped around. Students learned which seed types stick to fluffy animals to aid in further seed dispersal.

This week kindergarten got a chance to start learning about plants. Our kindergarten biologists even learned how dead plants can help people and animals. These students also got to see a live feed from a science lab that had cameras posted in an area where plants were being helpful. Students were able to see a live wild wolf come into the area on the live feed. It was very enjoyable.

STEM Student of the Week:  Lachlan Steele

Lach is almost always an example student. He follows expectations here at Van Buren and is always eager to learn. He is very helpful to classmates and even likes to help others learn when he can. In STEM class he is always eager to share answers, questions, thoughts, and ideas. He often is the first to raise his hand when a question is asked. He is alway using the inquiry process. He does it naturally and sometimes doesn’t even realize he is doing such a good job at using it. He definitely is a lover of the Science in STEM.
