Week of September 2, 2024
PreK
Preschool is enjoying the beautiful weather while playing on our playground!
Kindergarten
Kindergarten started new literacy stations this week! The kids are learning their letters, how to make shapes, how to create animal puzzles, and more!
Kindergarten students in Ms. LaGiglia’s class practiced their inquiry and design skills as they learned what a STEM project is.
First Grade
1. We came up with the problem: We have no chair pockets. We came up with the solution: We made them ourselves. STEM lesson was a success and now they’re reflecting on what they could have done differently in their writings.
2. We’ve been going up in our reading levels. Some of us have been reading 4-7 levels above what we were at the end of last year!
3. We have realized that the majority of our class has R as one of their strongest RIASEC codes! We have friends who want to enter in the field of zoology, pet store ownership, and rescue shelters. So many animal lovers in first grade!
4. We’ve learned how to make split art to help us feel more like a class family and give the kids a sense of belonging in first grade. We think they turned out fantastic!
5. We have been continuing to learn about rules and how we stay safe at school, including reminders on washing our hands with soap after we use the restroom and before we eat. We’ve had a number of friends out for illnesses, so these are good reminders!
Great week so far!
Second Grade
This week second grade has been learning about communities. They’ve learned that they are part of a community whether they live in an urban, suburban or rural setting. They each created a house for our classroom community.
Third Grade
Third graders spent time this week setting up their portfolios, conferencing with Mrs. Wagers and setting goals for the school year. They are excited to POP their goals and get bubblegum.
Fourth Grade
4th grade mathematicians worked with a partner to complete place value task cards all around the room. Collaboration at it’s finest!
Fifth Grade
5th Grade has been busy! We completed our Minecraft Stem Volume Zoo last week. The students had so much fun learning about volume!
In social studies they are busy learning their states and capitals in a variety of ways!
STEM
Mrs. Grimes’ and Mrs Fields’ classes worked on learning about the body’s defenses this week. Students learned about the structures of our bodies that protect us from germs. They documented these structures with drawings, labels, and text boxes on human body printouts as they learned all about the immune system.
Mrs. Morgan’s and Mrs. Platt’s students learned about some unique abilities that animals have. They learned why everyday bighorn sheep in Nevada visit a public park every day. They also learned why different frogs have different sounds and why they are making those sounds. Students enjoyed listening to different frog sounds and then documenting what they sounded like (as seen in the picture). They then were able to listen to frogs from a real pond and were able to use their scientific documentation to help identify the frogs and how many species of frogs were in the pond. They also learned that American Bullfrogs say their STEM teacher’s name, “Brooowwwn, Brooowwwn.” LOL
